Ten important mould facts you should be aware of:
- Allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory complaints are associated with mould exposure.
- Mould cannot be completely eliminated in the indoor environment, controlling moisture is the best way to control indoor mould growth.
- If mould is a problem in your home, indoor workplace or school, you must clean up the mould and eradicate the moisture source.
- To prevent mould growth, repair the source of the water problem or leak.
- Mould growth can be decreased by reducing indoor humidity (to 30-60%). You can reduce indoor humidity by: venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture generating sources to the outside, using de-humidifiers and air conditioners, increasing ventilation, and using exhaust fans whenever cooking, cleaning and dishwashing.
- Damp and or wet building materials and furnishings should be cleaned and dried within 24-48 hours to prevent mould growth.
- Mould can be cleaned off hard surfaces by washing with water and detergent and then drying completely.
- Use insulation to help prevent condensation on cold surfaces (e.g windows, piping, exterior walls, roof and floors)
- Do not install carpeting in areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem (i.e concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation)
- Moulds can grow on wood, paper, carpet and foods – in fact, on virtually any substance where moisture is present.
Always deal with any problems involving water and moisture seepage promptly
